BBBSEMO Helps Forge Iron Moms

BBBSEMO's match support specialists often see the struggles and challenges that the mothers of our “Littles” face as they balance family, work, and school often at the expense of their own health.  To help these moms, BBBSEMO formed a relationship with IronMom, an organization dedicated to changing the lives of single mothers by helping them adopt physical activity and nutrition into their hectic lifestyles.  “The opportunity was too great not to take advantage of it, on behalf of our moms,”  say Match Support Specialist Ann Brown, who served as coordinator for IronMom.

IronMom is a structured 8 week training program designed to prepare a person of any fitness level to compete in a 5k (approximately 3.1 miles) walk/run event.  Participants received a free pair of running shoes from Big River Running, a training schedule and the opportunity for a practice run with other IronMom participants.  BBBS staff helped match participants with training buddies, sent regular messages of support, and answered questions about training.

A total of nine moms participated in a 5k run/walk on Saturday, May 24th in University
. “Our moms did great! Each mom had trained differently and completed the race at different times. They all started together but some ran and some walked and some did both. Almost all of the moms at least ran through the finish line. It was the first time for most of them, so completion was the real goal, not necessarily a certain time,” said Brown.

“It was really fun and interesting to meet other ladies.  It was a nice opportunity to give other women,” says Tomeika Jones one of BBBSEMO's most enthusiastic participants.  Jones trained with the help of her son and daughter but also had a lot of support.  "The Speech therapist at my school was also very supportive and said I was an inspiration to her. The therapist attended the race and made a sign. My mom and boyfriend were also very supportive," Jones said.

For at least one IronMom the experience will have a lifelong impact.  Jones plans on running the Ballwin 5k and to keep working out.  “Thanks to BBBS and IronMom for giving me the opportunity! Thanks for motivating and encouraging me during the training and practice run! It was great!”
